Class Mini Bio
David Conley
After graduation, it was a while until I was able to take roots. Spending time at Morehead State, coming back to Maysville working at Myer's Brothers and attending Electronic School in Lexington, I joined Army Reserves in 1965 and went off to training.
I met guys from Lexington that were making more by being at Training than I was working. They worked for IBM. They told me they were hiring and I should check them out.
After training, I applied at IBM and was hired on the spot in 1966. While there, I had numerous jobs and positions. I worked in Parts, Disposition, Manuafcturing, Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Purchasing. Then in 1991, IBM became Lexmark. My positions within Lexmark were mainly in Engineering or related positions. I went back to school and I graduated in 1980 with an Electrical Engineering Degree. My last 15 years were mainly in support of their Electronic Components, whether it was in Supplier Support, Manuafacturing Purchasing. My last position was Program Manager for Laser Printer Development. I was Corporate Purchasing Manager for this group.
I retired in 2001. My Army life paralleled IBM/Lexinton for just about the same period. I was able to obtain the rank of First Sergeant in several commands. I was in charge of the Maysville reserve unit during our mobilization in 1991 during Desert Storm/Desert Shield.
While on duty, I was transferred to another Company. I was First Sergeant over 250 plus soldiers, taking a so-so outfit to one of the most outstanding within our Division. This unit was Deactivated in 1993. I was assigned to a Support Group command and while there, I was the Senior First Sergeant. This Command was in transition of a Command Sergeant Major and I was asked to temporarily fill this position. I held this position for about six months. During this time of the Clinton administration, the armed services were downsizing and there was a surplus of Command Sergeant Major's, so I was replaced. But all was not lost, I retired after 29 years in 1994.
I have lived in Lexington since leaving Maysville, except for a short employment in the Dallas, Texas area in 2001.(Bummer)
I am married to my wife Jan and have two children, Tabitha, 33 and Sean, 32. Both live in the Gulfport, Mississippi area. Sean is a Project Manager for a large electrical contractor in Southern Mississippi and Tab is a Business Manager for a Nursing Home.
Note from Sherry: Classmates, please send me a short bio of your life since 1964. I know we would all like to read and catch up on what you have been doing. Thanks, David for sharing with all of us.
